Preventing lice should be your first thought when it comes to getting rid of lice, but if you already have an issue, here are a few tips for how to get rid of lice in your home.
If you suspect lice or know you have it, there are a few steps you should take to prevent future outbreaks
You should treat all bed sheets, clothing, and hair utensils that may have come in contact with the lice. Lice is only transferable through direct contact so if you have it, the first step of how to get rid of lice is to sanitize and remove any infected object.
You can soak hair items in question in either very hot water, or rubbing alcohol to kill off any lice or eggs that may be attached to them. Intense heat is one effective method for killing lice as well using chemicals like alcohol or specialty shampoo for getting rid of lice.
If you do have lice in your home, additional steps you can take is to thoroughly clean you areas in your home where lice could hide out. One such area is in the carpet. Frequent vacuuming should become a priority in case lice made its way into it and started to lay eggs.
An additional area to treat would be where you sleep or any clothes you may have had in contact with the lice. Thoroughly clean your bed sheets and pillow cases or clothing in hot water, and dry on high for at least 30 minutes to kill off any lice that may have been present.
Over-the-counter remedies may not be your best option for an effective way of how to get rid of lice
There are a variety of over-the-counter methods you can buy for getting rid of lice, but the downside to this is that lice are very adaptive creatures and have been developing resistance to some of these treatments. Lice have been around for thousands of years dating back to ancient Egypt and beyond and they don’t show any signs of going away.
Lice have been ever evolving and adapting to how humans live and have developed many resistances to chemical treatments. Unfortunately this means there aren’t really any quick fixes to resolving a lice issue, thus making prevention the most effective means for keeping you and your home lice free.
Many people have found going a natural route the best option for treating and getting rid of lice.
A few natural home treatments for getting rid of head lice
Beyond the prevention steps outlined above of killing off lice, the next step is removing them from your head and/or body. Even though this can be time consuming and mind numbing, it is the surefire piece to combine with other efforts. As with most pest control efforts, a combination of effective modes increases success rates.
Vinegar – With this method it’s best to cover your head with a half vinegar half water mixture or half mineral oil. Cover your hair with a shower cap to trap the lice in the vinegar solution and leave it overnight. Since vinegar is very acidic this can help kill off the lice, nymph (baby & adolescent lice), as well as nits (eggs). Simply wash out the solution with your regular shampoo the next morning. You’ll want to use this approach several times a week for a month or two. Also be sure to frequently comb your hair with a nit comb to eliminate any lice or nits or eggs. Keep in mind that nit combs are not going to grab all nits, so it is important to use a bright light and do a visual inspection as you go to manually remove any missed nits.
Mayonnaise – This method focuses on suffocating the lice on your head. Thoroughly cover your head with mayonnaise and cover it with a shower cap. Keep this on your head for at least five hours. Then simply wash your hair out with regular shampoo, and comb out your hair with a nit comb to remove the lice that you can. Do this at minimum once a week for around two months. The difficulty on this is ensuring that air pockets are not left for the lice to find and survive. Also, it is not possible to suffocate nits.
Coconut Oil – This method is similar to the ones above but does seem to have quicker results. You make a solution of coconut oil and camphor and apply this solution in your hair and leave it under a shower cap overnight. This method works on suffocation as well. You should use it every day for five days or more to get rid of any lice issues.
There are several other home remedies that have been shown to be effective, but they all rely on the same principle of either suffocation or using something acidic to kill off the lice. The most important points are to always use visual inspection and removal to any other effort being used and continue treatment until all lice and nits are certainly gone. Leaving a few survivors will allow the stronger lice to build a super population that is more resistant to control efforts.

Hey, Mike, Withrow pest control here and today's video, just want to give you a few tips on how you can get rid of lice if you have them in your home.
So one thing to really keep in mind is that an ounce of prevention is worth way more than a pound of cure, especially when it comes to lice because they're, very Hardy creatures.
They've actually been around for thousands of years dating back well, past ancient Egypt, and it really hasn't become any easier getting rid of them than it was back then.
So they continually to adapt and evolve and become tougher to get rid of so prevention should be your first priority when it comes to lice.
If you do happen to have an issue, though here are some different tips that you can use to get rid of lice.
So the first thing is going to be to get rid of them on any clothing or hair brushes or utensils, where lice would be coming in contact with you.
So again, lice can't jump or fly.
So the only way that they're going to transfer into your home is going to be through direct contact through a clothing article bedding sheets, clothing, hair care, hair, utensils different things like that.
So one thing that you can do to get rid of them is going to be sanitizing and killing off any lice that might be on a hair care product.
So things like combs, headbands hair, brushes different things like that.
So you want to soak these in very hot water for at least twenty to thirty minutes, or you can soak them in things like rubbing alcohol or chemicals things that are gonna kill off lice is one thing that you can do so use that with any hair utensils that you might use around your home again, they can also transfer and live in things like carpeting.
So upping, your vacuuming around your home doing that very frequently.
If you know that you have a license, oh they're, not breeding and living in the carpet.
So do that another thing would be clothing and bedding things like pillowcases sheets hats, jackets just clothing that you may have worn and been in contact with someone that has lice or again, if you have it, you want to treat these as well.
One of the best ways you can do that is washing your clothes or sheets or bedding things like that on a hot water setting in your washing machine.
And then setting them in the dryer for at least 30 minutes or more on high intense heat is another way that kills lice.
So you want to make sure that you sanitize and kill off any lysimachia, your bedding or clothing as well.
Now, the last kind of treatment that you can use for getting rid of lice is going to be using some sort of, you know, chemical treatment that's out there.
But unfortunately, a lot of over-the-counter methods are starting to become an ineffective lice like I said, are very Hardy creatures.
So they're evolving and adapting and building up resistance is to over counter medication treatment methods.
So beyond that there's, actually a lot of different home remedies that a lot of people do choose to use, they can be effective, but again, they're, not in overnight fix.
And they do take time to get rid of lice, but some of the effective methods that are known.
One of them is using like a vinegar, water solution or vinegar, mineral oil solution, just coating your hair with that.
And then putting on a shower cap to really trap in the lice and trap in that formula.
And you leave that overnight.
And then you rinse, it out the next day and be sure to comb out your hair with a Knick comb that's, basically going to get rid of like full-grown lice nits, which are baby lice, and then help get rid of the eggs as well.
And you need to do this treatment every few days for up to two months.
So again, it's, not an easy process to get rid of, but it can be effective.
The acidity level in the vinegar can help kill off these lights.
Another method that's, commonly known is using mayonnaise and it's.
The same kind of concept.
You coat your head with that put on a shower cap, and you want to leave that for at least five to six hours.
And this treatment is focusing more on suffocating, the lice.
And again, it's, not an overnight.
You want to be doing this.
At least once a week for again, up to around two months to get rid of all the lice.
And you know washing that out after it's done and then combing out the ones that you can find.
Another solution would be using coconut oil and a mixture of camphor again, using this mixture, more of a suffocation method, same kind of thing apply that solution in your hair, put on a shower cap, leave it overnight.
And then again, you can repeat this for several days in a row, five days or more to get rid of lice.
So again, very Hardy creatures, all kinds of methods out there that focus more on suffocation or using acid levels to again, kill off the lice.
But again prevention is going to be your best method, especially when it comes to getting real lice.
So an ounce of prevention is going to go a long way for getting rid of lice.
