One of the things that you may not think about when owning a Thermomix is the ability to make lots of different non food basics. Here is a recipe that I have followed with success to make my own Thermomix Washing Powder. I have been using this recipe since sharing on the ThermoFun Facebook page in September 2013.

The recipe is fromhttps://www.domesticdivaunleashed.com/washing-powder-and-gel-in-the-thermomix

Would this washing powder be suitable for septic tanks?

Jill, washing soda is pictured in the top left corner. It can be found in most major supermarkets.

I just love this recipe, I use this washing powder all time now. The sard soap makes the difference to other recipes I have tried. I find it to be very economical as well.
    A winner, thanks girls.

Thanks for recipe, my husband was having allergic reactions to most of the commercial brand washing powders
. After using this all the rashes and irritation have gone.

When would you put the eucalyptus oil or essential oil in.

    • thermofun says

Roslyn I would put it in the washing machine at the time of doing a load. :)

I just did a rough calculation buying all ingredients from my local coles it works out to be $5.80 for just over 1.2 kg I was paying $4 for 1 kg of the coles washing powder but I would use two scoops so if you only need 2-3 heaped table spoons for the same result or better I thinl inusuage it will work out cheaper although is someone os paying more for a more expensive brand of washong powder such as omo they will definitely be saving ;-) hope this helps

I made this yesterday. Results ok, but not outstanding. It cost me $10.14 to make for 1.8kg....I made a double batch. I bought my ingredients from Woolworths and Bunnings. Whilst I love making things from scratch, I'm not sure this is the most economical way to buy/make washing powder.

I do a similar recipe, only no sard and borax, I use 1/2 cup bi carb and 1/2 cup rock salt with 1cup washing soda and 2o drops eucalyptus oil for a refreshing smell. I also just use white vinegar as a fabric softener.

Going to do a similar recipe for dishwashing powder with citric acid when I can find it or may just add some lemon juice, do you think that would be a good substitute Leonie?

I've been making this recipe for a while and I love it. I actually use a whole sard cake instead of half; I misread the recipe the first time and continued to make that way ever since. You might find with synthetics they become static. I use an environmentally friendly fabric softener, or hair conditioner works fine too, it's pretty much the same stuff. I use it for washing everything now.

Where do you buy washing soda from?

    Reply

    • thermofun says

Hi Lynda - I found it at my local IGA - so I would assume Coles & Woolworths would have it too. They keep it near the washing powders.

Is the washing detergent suitable for front loading machines? How sudsy is it?

    Reply

    • thermofun says

Hi Toni, It is not sudsy at all. So yes it can be used in a front loader - just use half the amount.

Do you use the bowl exclusively for your cleaning products, or do you give it a good clean and then carry on using it as normal for your cooking?

    Reply

    • thermofun says

Julie I feel most comfortable using my bowl for cleaning products and food. It is a stainless steel bowl with no cracks for anything to remain after a good wash. :)

Hi I've been looking everywhere for Borax but can't find where to buy it! Can anyone help? thanks

    • thermofun says

Cathie, I buy my borax from Coles or Woolworths. Do you have a local store?n You may need to ask them where they stock it as sometimes it can be found in the most odd of places!

My Woolwoths doesn't stock it so I buy mine from Bunnings from the cleaning area/storage area

Bunnings have 1kg tubs of it - in the cleaning aisle

Woolies and Coles have smaller tubs - usually on the bottom shelf where you can't see it!

Yes, I make a similar powder: 1 cake of soap, 1 cup Lectric Soda powder (not chrystals), 1/2 cup borax, 1 pkt bi carb. Sometimes I use 1 cup of lux flakes instead of the soap.

    • thermofun says

how much is there in a packet of bi carb soda?

      Reply

      • thermofun says

Hi Tatiana, the packet size does not matter, you just need 315g. The recipe calls for washing soda which is different to bi carb. :)
